Why Keys Break — and Why the Response Matters
Keys are under more stress than most people realize. Every time you turn the ignition or unlock a door, the key experiences torque, friction, and wear. Over time — especially with older brass keys, heavily duplicated copies, or keys that were already slightly bent — the metal fatigues and eventually snaps. Cold weather accelerates this: metal contracts, locks stiffen, and drivers apply extra force without realizing it. Keys also break when there's a misalignment in the lock cylinder, when someone forces a wrong key, or when a key was cut slightly off-spec to begin with.
The critical mistake most people make in the first few moments after a key breaks is trying to extract the fragment themselves using household tools — tweezers, bobby pins, or even a pen knife. This approach almost always pushes the fragment deeper into the cylinder, bends it sideways, or scores the internal pin stack, turning a straightforward extraction into a full cylinder replacement. The safest and most cost-effective response is to stop, avoid turning the lock further, and call a qualified locksmith immediately.
